PROSPECT Interviews Amartya Sen on Triton Television on Vimeo.

PROSPECT President Kimberly Ang and contributing writer Tania White sat down with economist and Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen on Friday, April 1st. The evening before, over 1,200 students and community members filled the Price Center Ballroom to hear a talk by Sen on "Justice: Local and Global." Famed for his prolific work in justice and development, Sen addressed both theoretical and empirical approaches to the idea of justice and fielded a diverse set of questions from the audience. Sponsored by UCSD's Division of Social Sciences; Institute for International, Comparative and Area Studies (IICAS); and Extended Studies and Public Programs, the event helped launch the new UCSD Center on Global Justice, which is a home for social science research in global justice. In this exclusive interview with PROSPECT, Professor Sen shared his views on the disconnect between theory and practice (00:38); strategies for ensuring justice in non-democratic countries (3:14); the role of art in expression and his favorite artists (8:11); his favorite meal (12:13); and the UC budget crisis (15:11).Main photo by Leena Bhakta.
